Today is Is Monday, "Coo'wo' "
Indigenous Peoples' Day is a holiday that celebrates and honors the history, cultures, and contributions of Indigenous peoples, particularly Native American communities in the United States. It is observed on the second Monday of October, the same day as the federal holiday Columbus Day, but serves as an alternative celebration to focus on the experiences and legacy of Indigenous peoples, rather than Christopher Columbus and colonization.
The day aims to acknowledge the resilience, rich traditions, and historical significance of Indigenous nations, as well as their ongoing contributions to modern society. It also raises awareness about the struggles Indigenous peoples have faced, including the impacts of colonization, cultural erasure, and historical injustices.
Many cities, states, and communities across the U.S. have adopted Indigenous Peoples' Day in place of or alongside Columbus Day to promote understanding and respect for Indigenous cultures and histories.
